Previously, SSH was linked to the first RSA keys that were generated (that is, SSH was enabled when the first RSA key pair was generated). When generating a key, you'll get two files: idrsa (private key) and idrsa.pub (public key). As their names suggest, the private key should be kept secret and the public key can be published to the public. Public-key authentication works with a public and a private key.

One effective way of securing SSH access to your cloud server is to usea public-private key pair. This means that a public key is placed onthe server and a private key is placed on your local workstation.Using a key pair makes it impossible for someone to log in by using justa password, as long as you set up SSH to deny password-basedauthentication.

Generate keys

In Windows, use PuTTYgen to generate your public and private keys.

  2. Launch the program, and then click the Generate button.The program generates the keys for you.

You can use the RSA key pair in the following ways.

Specify your SSH key when creating a new cloud server

When you create a cloud server, you can assign a public key from the list of keys.If your key is not already in the list, you may add it, and then assign it.

  2. Select public key for the cloud server from the SSH Keys listand click Add Public Key.
  3. Enter the key name, select the region, and paste the entire publickey into the Public Key field. Then click Add Public Key.
  4. Go back to the Create Server page, and confirm that your key is listedin the SSH Key list.

Assign your SSH Key to an existing cloud server

To make use of your newly generated RSA key pair, you must tell PuTTY touse it when connecting to your cloud server.

    You must have the key available in your clipboard to paste it. The key and itsassociated text (the ssh-rsa identified at the start and the comment at the end)must be on one line in the file. If the text is word-wrapped onto multiple linesan error might occur when connecting.

  5. Browse to the location of the key file, and load the private key.

  6. Go to the Session page, and save the session. This saves the configurationso that PuTTY uses the key every time that you connect to your cloudserver.

How to Create a Public/Private Key Pair

The standard procedure for creating a Solaris Secure Shell public/private key pair follows. For additional options, see the ssh-keygen(1)man page.

  1. Start the key generation program.


  2. Enter the path to the file that will hold the key.

    By default, the file name id_rsa, which represents an RSA v2 key, appears in parentheses. You can select this file by pressing the Return key. Or, you can type an alternative filename.


    The public key name is created automatically. The string .pub is appended to the private key name.

  3. Enter a passphrase for using your key.

    This passphrase is used for encrypting your private key. A good passphrase is 10-30 characters long, mixes alphabetic and numeric characters, and avoids simple English prose and English names. Aws generate key pair putty. A null entry means no passphrase is used. A null entry is strongly discouraged foruser accounts. Note that the passphrase is not displayed when you type it in.


  4. Re-enter the passphrase to confirm it.


  5. Check the results.

    The key fingerprint, which is a colon-separated series of 2-digit hexadecimal values, is displayed. Check that the path to the key is correct. In the example, the path is /home/johndoe/.ssh/id_rsa.pub. At this point, you have created a public/private key pair.

  6. Set up the authorized_keys file on the destination host.

    1. Copy the id_rsa.pub file to the destination host. Type the command on one line with no backslash.


    2. When you are prompted, supply your login password.

      When the file is copied, the phrase “Key uploaded successfully.” is displayed.
